Professor David Lloyd
Vice Chancellor and President of UniSA

2020, oil on linen, 67 x 51 cm

Commissioned by the Univeristy of South Australia. Charming and approachable, David is the youngest Vice Chancellor in Australia. This portrait is a departure from the status quo for a Vice Chancellors portrait. He is not in robes, instead jeans and jacket, sans tie. He is sitting on an ordinary chair, one that his students would sit in. He is located in the new MOD building on North Terrace in Adelaide - one of David’s passion projects - Australia’s leading future-focused museum, provoking new ideas at the intersection of science, art and innovation. South Australia is my home state I am proud to see a focus on education evident in the skyline of my beloved city. The primary state colours of South Australia are layered with complex glazes to multiply into shades of green, purple and orange (echo’s of Davids home country, Ireland). A personal friend of the late Sir Terry Pratchett, David has a passion for science fiction (A Star Trek buff, it is no accident that UniSA is the university of “enterprise” and is symbolised in the fourth button on the arm of his jacket.
